"It's not all about bling-bling and all the gold and Cristal. Know the business,
learn the business, own something. Don't slip into the traps, and don't forget
about your 'hood, the kids in the 'hood. Remember: you're disposable, so
take advantage while you can
." Isaac Hayes (Introduction to his induction into the Rock & Roll
Hall of Fame, March 2002)
Did you see or hear about 'Who Got The Bay City
Rollers' Millions?', the Channel 4 TV exposé
into how members of one of Britain's
biggest-selling '70s pop groups ended up so broke they couldn't afford to
pay for lawyers to investigate their business affairs and their homes were
repossessed. It's because of such scenarios that we run our music
business courses for young people and adults. We need to make them realise
that is not just about music, but a business.
BTWSC 8 week music business (with some music technology)
course for east London youth aged 13-19 NOT in education, employment or
training, or those at the risk of exclusion. (NEWHAM,
July-August 2004, Mondays 4-7pm). £Free. To book, contact Ms Serwah on
020 8450 5987 or info@btwsc.com.
BTWSC has run several cycles of music business courses in Brent,
Haringey, Newham and Lambeth for unemployed persons, young people, and
women. It has also been commissioned to run music business courses for
organisations and schools.
The BTWSC music business course content include
copyright, contracts, marketing, industry structure and organisations, and
sources of income. Some courses also include music technology and
creativity sessions.
The courses are run by experience music business
tutors with experience ranging from music business courses at grass-roots
to post-graduate level. Their work is supported by guest speakers, such as
publishers, label owners, journalists, who provide specialist knowledge
and networking contacts.
The music business courses are free. However, as
demand far outstrips our capacity to secure funding, we are considering
paid-for courses for the near future.
